Graphics Cards For More Than Just Graphics

Monday December 29, 2008

Many many years ago, computer processors were not as complex as they are today. Any time that specialized mathematics needed to be done, special processors were developed to handle those tasks rather than taxing the CPU. Graphics cards were one of the things developed out of this trend. They were built for processing large amounts of graphical calculations regarding 2D and 3D graphics.

Today's graphics cards are extremely fast and can outperform a CPU for many tasks but they typically sit idle unless they are being used for 3D applications such as gaming. There is a growing trend that is accessing these unused graphics processors to help supplement a CPU for processing various computing tasks. Find out more about this growing trend and how more and more performance computers may integrate fast graphics processors into them as well as high end CPUs.
