Quad core processors have the ability to let computers run more simultaneous applications without slowdowns. They also have the ability to greatly improve the speed of very processor intensive applications. They used to be found on in fairly expensive desktop computers, but the amount that consumers have to pay in order to get a desktop with such a processor has come down dramatically.
