Microsoft has traditionally been a software company that produces the software that runs the majority of personal computers. They left the hardware designs for the computers that run their software up to the various hardware partners. This has changed with the release of Windows 8 and specifically Windows RT for tablets. The Surface is their first major computing product that uses their new tablet specific version of the Windows 8 operating system which they hope will pull away momentum from Apple and Google.
