4/28/04 - HP has been battling with Dell for some time over being the top seller of PCs in the US, and they have made many strides to take that position. The Pavilion ze5701us is HP's latest budget notebook computer.
Powering the Pavilion ze5701us is Intel's latest Intel Celeron 2.8 GHz processor. Matched to this is 256MB of PC2100 DDR memory. This should provide the ze5701us with enough power for Internet and Office applications. The memory will restrict more intensive applications.
Storage is average for the market segment with a 24x CD-RW combo optical drive and a 30 GB hard drive. Budget notebooks tend to have more limited space, but the CD-RW allows the system to offload files onto CD media. The DVD capability gives the ze5701us the ability to playback DVD movies.
Graphics and audio are nothing spectacular. The 15" LCD screen is large enough for most users and has good color and brightness. The ATI Mobility Radeon graphics are a step above the more standard Intel Extreme integrated graphics, but the system is still very limited for 3D applications.
The biggest drawback to the ze5701us is the lack of 802.11b compatible wireless networking. This is something that is only starting to show up in the budget segment, but with the availability of access points, more consumers are demanding the features.
Overall, the HP system is a good mix of components and features that will provide the average user with a very well rounded system for the money.
