The Bottom Line
Toshiba's Satellite A45-S121 may be a bit heavier and larger than other budget notebook systems, but the number of extras gives it a bit of an edge over the competition.

Guide Review - Toshiba Satellite A45-S121

4/29/04 - Deciphering all of the different notebook models that Toshiba has to offer can be a daunting task. The Toshiba Satellite A45-S121 is one of their latest budget notebook computers.

Powering the Satellite A45-S121 is Intel's latest 2.8GHz Celeron processor. This should provide enough computing power for most applications that users will have. It is matched up with a standard 256MB of PC2100 memory. This is sufficient for most office and Internet applications but will slow the system down for more intensive applications.

Storage is very good for a budget system. A large 40GB hard drive is offered for user storage as well as a 24x CD-RW combo drive. This allows users to burn music or data CDs as well as view DVD movies.

Graphics are standard for the budget category. It has a large 15" LCD screen which is easy to read. It is driven by the Intel Extreme integrated graphics. This is sufficient for most applications but don't expect much in terms of 3D support.

If there is one area that could use improvement on the A45-S121, it is the connectivity. With the low cost and widely accessible 802.11b networks it would be nice to see it included on the system. The system does allow for a large number of peripherals thanks to its 4 USB 2.0 ports.

Overall, the Toshiba Satellite A45-S121 makes for a very good budget system even if it does have a fwe minor drawbacks.
