3/22/04 - The Fujistu LifeBook B3010D is a laptop that doesn't quite fit into any specific category. It is an ultraportable computer that is quite easy to carry around and still features most of the components of a standard PC, but it also tries to tap into the market of the Tablet PC with its LCD touch screen.
The B3010D is based around the Intel Centrino package, including a Pentium M 1GHz ultra-low voltage processor and 802.11b wireless. The ultra-low voltage CPU helps the B3010D have extremely good battery life while not compromising too much on power. Of course there are more powerful Pentium M processors available now. It is matched with 256MB of PC2100 memory.
Storage is supplied by a very large 60GB hard drive which is large for this market segment. Of course, it does drop the internal optical drive for an external media bay that does not come with the system standard. This could be problematic for those needing optical storage.
Of course the big feature on the B3010D is the 10.6" XGA touch screen. This essentially lets the user use a stylus as a mouse pointer . It does not carry the same level of functionality as the Tablet PC platforms. Graphics use the integrated Intel Extreme2 graphics which is standard for this segment.
Another area that is disappointing is the software. The LifeBook 3010D does not come with any productivity software. In the end, users are better off either going with other ultraportables for more features or a Tablet PC.
