1/21/04 - The first impression of the Gateway M675 desktop replacement is its sheer size. This is one large notebook due to its 17.1" wide screen LCD panel. And the screen is very impressive thanks in part to the ATI Radeon 9600 Mobility graphics processor teamed up with it. This allows the large screen to handle most 3D acceleration including DirectX 9 graphics.
But the M675X isn't all just about its screeen. One of the big features is the Pentium 4 3.0 GHz desktop processor with Hyper Threading support. This will allow users to blaze through even the most processor intensive tasks. Matched up with the CPU is 512MB of PC2700 memory.
Storage is impressive with a 60GB hard drive and a 2X DVD-RW burner. This is a good addition as it allows the system to use its potential as a mobile video editing platform. Also included for storage is a 6-in-1 media card reader for use with all those digital peripheral flash cards.
Networking is good on the system as well. Gateway has included a 802.11g wireless network adapter to allow use of either the high-speed wireless or be compatible with older 802.11b networks.
If there is one drawback to the M675X it is its size. This is one really large notebook computer. Of course, that size also has a benefit of having enough space to include a full sized keyboard including a numerical pad. For those that can live with the size of the system, this makes for one powerful desktop replacement.
