3/24/04 - The HP Compaq nc4010 is a customizable ultraportable notebook computer system that can be purchased through the company web site. It is targeted towards business customers so the level of features is higher than what is found on most ultraportables.
The nc4010 is powered by a Intel Pentium M processor with a very fast 1.6GHz speed. This is the equivalent of a Pentium 4 Mobile 2.4GHz CPU but with better battery life. The CPU is matched to 512MB of PC2100 DDR which is higher than average for this market segment.
Storage is provided through a 40GB 5,400 rpm hard drive that gives very good performance. Optical storage is provided through an external media bay that comes with a 24x CD-RW combo drive. The system also features a Secure Digital media card slot.
Graphics are the very strong with the nc4010. Most ultraportable use the Intel Extreme 2 integrated graphics with shared video memory. The nc4010 instead uses an ATI Mobility graphics processor that provides better acceleration and 3D graphics. It certainly isn't designed for gaming though. The 12.1" screen is large for the ultraportable market and has very good color and contrast.
Since the nc4010 is geared towards business customers, the system comes standard with a three year warranty and Windows XP Professional. These are nice touches to the system, but make it very expensive for the consumer market. There are other systems that can provide consumers with what they need for less.
