Guide Review - HP Pavilion zd7010us
1/22/04 - HP was one of the first companies to offer a 17" PC compatible notebook following Apple's lead with their powerbooks. This rush to market of the zd7000 series notebooks may ultimately hurt the systems in the long run.
The zd7010us is powered by a desktop Pentium 4 2.66GHz processor which gives it good speed. It is matched up with 512MB of PC2700 memory. This puts it slightly below average against the competition.
Storage is a mix of good and average features. The 60GB hard drive is above the average for the market, although it is quickly becoming more standard. The 24x CD-RW Combo drive is good for burning music or data and still allowing for DVD playback. The big advantage is the integrated 6-in-1 media card reader for use with digital peripheral flash cards.
The real bright spot of the zd7010us is the 17" wide-screen LCD panel. This uses a slightly higher 1440x900 resolution over the more standard 1280x800. This is good, but the system is powered by an older NVIDIA GeForce4 440 Go processor. While it has 64MB of dedicated memory, it does lack DirectX 9 support or the ability to do 3D acceleration at the high native resolution.
The other major drawback to the zd7010us is of course the size. This qualifies as the largest in dimensions and very close to the heaviest system available. The large size does allow for a full size keyboard including numeric pad. Overall, the zd7010us is an average system when it comes to desktop replacements.
