1/23/04 - Toshiba's Satellite P15 series notebook is very similar to that of the P25, except it features a smaller 15.4" wide screen LCD over the 17" model. This makes the P15 a bit more portable than its larger sibling.
The system is powered by an Intel Pentium 4 2.8 GHz desktop CPU with Hyper Threading support. This gives the system a boost in performance while multitasking or using multithreaded applications. The system is held back by its memory as it only has PC2100 memory rather than PC2700 that most competitors use.
Storage is impressive on the system. Its biggest feature is a 2x speed DVD-RW burner. This puts the Toshiba optical drive faster than most competing models that feature DVD burners. Hard drive space is large at 60GB and there is also a SD media card slot, although it would be nice to see a multiformat reader instead.
Graphics are a mixed blessing on the P15-S409 mode. The 15.4" wide-screen LCD panel is a very good screen, but it is powered by a very anemic GeForceFX 5100 Go. This is essentially a lower clocked GeForceFX 5200Go core. It supports DirectX 9, but don't expect any real performance with 3D applications.
In the end, the Toshiba P15-S409 certainly isn't a bad desktop replacement, but neither does it stand out from its compeition. It has good overall performance that is somewhat hampered by slower memory and limited 3D graphics.
