Review - ASUS G74SX-A1 17.3 Inch Gaming Laptop
ASUS scored a home run with the Republic of Gamers G73 line of gaming laptops, and the successor - aptly named the G74 - is equipped to do some serious PC gaming as well. Today's review is on the ASUS G74SX-A1, which is the high-end G74SX model. This 17.3-inch gaming laptop offers gamers a gorgeous full HD (1920x1080) display that provides superb visuals. Because of the high resolution screen, the ASUS G74SX-A1 is capable of being an excellent gaming and multimedia PC.
With a retail price of $1,799, one would expect a decent processor. The ASUS G74SX-A1 has a quad-core Intel 2nd Generation Core i7-2630QM CPU that runs at 2.0GHz. This chip is speedy and offers four cores for heavily threaded applications, which enables the laptop to excel in more than just gaming.
Next up is the memory. This G74SX-A1 is decked out with 12GB of DDR3 1333MHz memory, making it a top performer in intensive applications, such as Adobe Photoshop. The system supports up to 16GB so there is some flexibility in achieving even greater performance.
Hard drive space also is robust with two 750GB 7200RPM hard drives. Although I wish ASUS included a smaller SSD or even a hybrid drive for the boot drive, having 1.5TB of total disk space is nice. But how does the ASUS G74SX-A1 perform in the latest games? It has no problem running popular DirectX 11 titles, such as Dungeon Siege III and Portal 2, with the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M. The GTX 560M has 3GB of GGDR5 video RAM, which is beneficial for smooth performance. It also is NVIDIA 3D Vision Ready, so you can output to a 3D HDTV for fun.
As mentioned in the opening of this review, the full HD display is awesome for multimedia as well. The ASUS G74SX-A1 has a Blu-ray/DVD ombo drive, which allows you to watch high definition movies on your PC with ease. And since the laptop has an HDMI port, you can use the functionality of the Blu-ray drive to watch movies on a compatible HDTV.
In terms of design, the ASUS G74SX-A1 is similar, yet slightly refined, compared to the G73. The matte black finish is soft to the touch, and the laptop has a 10-key numeric keypad. The G74 also has rear vents to direct hot air away from the gamer. It is slightly on the thick side and quite heavy at 9.4 pounds with the 8-cell battery due to the large 17.3-inch screen size and high performance components. But the ASUS G74SX-A1 is a desktop replacement, and you won't find as much power in thin and light laptops.
In conclusion, the ASUS G74SX-A1 is a great buy due to the abundance of RAM, phenomenal display, and great video card. At $1,799, it holds its own with two hard drives and a Blu-ray reader. It is a versatile machine that is capable of video editing, gaming, and multimedia.
