The Bottom Line
Jul 23 2011 - AVADirect sells custom PCs with an emphasis on high performance gaming systems. The AVADirect Clevo P150HM is a 15.6 inch laptop that can be configured with the recently announced AMD Radeon HD 6990M. However, the standard $1,531 configuration boasts an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M 1.5GB graphics card that is still a high performance component. Unfortunately, there are a few upgrades that are necessary to avoid bottlenecks, but the availability of options (and even a custom paint job) are nice to have.

Review - AVADirect Clevo P150HM 15.6 Inch Gaming Laptop
AVADirect is a custom computer builder with a wide array of gaming notebooks utilizing Clevo, MSI, or OCZ chassis. Today's review is on the 15.6 inch AVADirect gaming laptop built using a Clevo P150HM. As with all of AVADirect's computers, the P150HM is fully customizable with a starting price of $1,531. For enthusiastic gamers who want a personalized system, the AVADirect Clevo P150HM offers a broad range of configurations from midrange to super high performance.
To start out, the base configuration of the AVADirect Clevo P150HM features a quad core Intel Core i7-2630QM. This robust chip can be found in most midrange performance laptops due to its speed. The CPU runs at 2.0GHz stock but can turbo up to 2.9GHz. It also has 6MB of L3 cache (L3 cache is faster than RAM so having more is better).
Speaking of memory, the AVADirect Clevo P150HM has a paltry 2GB of DDR3 1066MHz memory in the base configuration. Why this is even an option is beyond me. Nowadays, it's an absolute must to have at least 4GB of RAM. And for a system costing $1,500 or more, I'd expect closer to 8GB. Luckily, there are a variety of memory options available that won't break the bank, but it's still disappointing to see 2GB even listed. If you're unsure which memory to choose, I'd recommend opting for at least DDR3 1333MHz for faster performance.
One nice feature is the display. Many gamers like 15.6 inch notebooks due to the added portability over a 17.3 inch model. The Clevo P150HM is roughly 6 pounds so it's not overly heavy. But the full HD display is definitely an asset. Having 1920x1080 resolution is great for gaming and offers the option to watch movies in HD. Although adding a Blu-ray drive is an additional $91, it's worth considering if you use your laptop for entertainment.
Graphics are also quite good with an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M 1.5GB GDDR5 graphics card. But what's really neat about the Clevo P150HM is the availability of video card options. You can upgrade to the AMD Radeon HD 6990M, which is an extreme high performance card with 2GB of video RAM. The 6990M is faster and significantly cheaper than the NVIDIA GTX 580M making it a good buy if you seek extreme performance. However, if you are on a budget the base GeForce GTX 560M is still a high performance component in its own right that offers a stellar gaming scenario in conjunction with the 1080p display.
The base configuration also includes an average 7200RPM hard drive with 500GB of space. Of course, since the AVADirect Clevo P150HM is a custom laptop you can upgrade to your heart's content with options ranging from a larger 1TB drive to a 480GB SSD.
If you're looking for a fully customizable gaming laptop that can be configured with the ultimate graphics card and a custom paint job, the AVADirect Clevo P150HM is a worthy contender. However, some options are necessary to get the base model to a point where it is worth the money (memory being one of those things). But once those upgrades are in place, the P150HM can be an extreme gaming laptop.
