Review - Alienware M11x Gaming Laptop Review
In today's world, many gamers seek portability in a gaming laptop. The Alienware M11x takes that to the extreme with an updated model featuring the latest Intel 2nd Generation processors. For this review, the Core i7-based M11x that rings in at $1,199 is rated.
The Alienware M11x is equipped with a 720p display with a max resolution of 1366 x 768. Since the screen is only 11.6-inches, this resolution is more than adequate. The stealth black soft touch finish and overall design is similar to the larger M17x and M18x. Alienware also offers gamers an abundance of features and tweaks to create a more personalized experience, including customizable lighting controls with a variety of colors and lighting effects for the keyboard and touchpad. The Alienware M11x also comes with a laser etched nameplate that can be personalized with your name, guild, or more.
For nearly $1,200, the Alienware M11x features an Intel Core i7-2617M processor with a base speed of 1.5GHz and Turbo Boost functionality up to 2.6GHz and 4MB of cache. With a max TDP of 17 watts, this processor is a low voltage model that is necessary for an ultraportable laptop. Alienware also includes 6GB of DDR3 1333MHz memory in the base configuration, although upgrades are available. The cost to upgrade to 8GB is $60, which is probably worth it if you plan to use the system for a prolonged period of time.
One nice feature is the graphics card. A 2GB NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M graphics card is included in the Alienware M11x which is a decent value for a system in this price range. The card performs well in a variety of games, such as Dragon Age II and Rift. Performance does improve substantially by reducing or disabling anti-aliasing, though, while running a game at high settings. With 2GB of GDDR3, the NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M is a great choice for a gaming laptop, especially since it's energy efficient.
The Alienware M11x's hard drive is pretty adequate with 500GB of storage space. It is a 7200RPM hard drive, though. Although it is fast enough, it would be nice if Alienware included a hybrid drive option since the system is made for users on the go. Unfortunately, Alienware only has options for a larger 750GB 7200RPM hard drive or a 256GB solid state drive (which tacks on an extra $550 to the $1,199 price).
Although the Alienware M11x isn't inexpensive, it does offer high performance components for added value. The graphics card is a nice midrange model, and the processor offers fast performance without needing a lot of power. The 8-cell battery is a nice feature, too, as it provides longer gameplay on the go.
Overall, the Alienware M11x is a top option for those who need an ultraportable solution but still want added performance for smooth gameplay. The refreshed model features a sleek design that exudes an aggressive gaming feel. And with a starting weight of 4.4 pounds, the Alienware M11x is incredibly light, making it easy to take this notebook to school, on business trips, or to gaming events.
