The Bottom Line
Aug 20 2011 - The MSI GT683R-242US is a high performance 15.6-inch gaming laptop with a street price of $1,470. For under $1,500 you get a full 1080p display, excellent NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M 1.5GB GDDR5 graphics card, and 12GB of memory. The MSI GT683R-242US performs very well in the latest DirectX 11 games, and you can max out settings in many titles. Unfortunately, the GT683R does not have a full backlit keyboard, although the W, A, S, D gaming keys are illuminated. It's a small price to pay, though, for a speedy system that offers exceptional gaming capability.

Review - MSI GT683R-242US 15.6-inch Gaming Laptop
For most gamers, the ultraportable world of notebooks just doesn't cut it in terms of performance. That's where the MSI GT683R-242US comes into play. At 7.7 pounds, it definitely isn't a lightweight PC, but it does offer added portability over a full blown desktop replacement. For starters, the MSI GT683R-242US has a 15.6-inch 1920x1080 glossy screen that offers added clarity over non-HD displays. For gamers, the higher resolution is definitely appreciated while doing dungeon runs or PVP battles.
The MSI GT683R-242US also has a speedy Sandy Bridge Intel Core i7-2630QM quad-core mobile processor that runs at 2.0GHz stock with 6MB L3 cache. If you're into overclocking, it's relatively easy to push this system above that clock speed, which is a bonus that many other laptops can't offer.
Another positive attribute is the abundance of RAM in the MSI GT683R-242US. The system features 12GB of DDR3 memory for smoother performance while running intensive applications or a multitude of tabs in your browser. For nearly $1,500, having 12GB of memory is definitely above the norm and gives you added value over competing systems in the same price range.
If you find yourself storing a lot of data on your notebook, the two 500GB hard drives in RAID 0 will definitely come in handy. While RAID 0 does not provide data redundancy, it does increase performance.
But how well does this system perform in popular games? It does really well, and users can max out settings for many games. The MSI laptop features an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M video card with 1.5GB GDDR5. This is a high-end card that was recently announced at the end of May at Computex 2011 and features 192 CUDA cores and a 24.8 billion per second texture fill rate. Of course, the card also supports DirectX 11.
The overall design of the MSI GT683R-242US is also pleasant, although the lack of a backlit keyboard is disappointing. The W, A, S, D keys are illuminated, though, which is nice for gamers. The system does have excellent audio quality for a laptop, which is also a plus. If you plan on doing heavy gaming at home, an external set of speakers is still recommended, but having really good internal speakers is great for gamers on the go. Battery life also isn't too shabby for a gaming laptop, although you still want to be plugged in while gaming to enjoy higher settings.
If you're looking for a high performance gaming laptop, the MSI GT683R-242US is a great option. It offers fast speed, a lot of memory, and a high end mobile graphics card that shines in games. The storage capacity is a bonus, and the 1080p display is easy on the eyes.
