Review - MSI GT683R-289US 15.6 Inch Gaming Laptop
If mobility is key, the weight of a 17.3 inch laptop may be too much. That's why a 15.6 inch gaming laptop is a great compromise with enough screen real estate to game comfortably, yet easier to move from room to room compared to a full on desktop replacement. The overall design consists of a shiny black exterior. At 1.77 inches thick, it is not an overly thin laptop, but you have to remember that the system has high end components and needs proper ventilation to keep the system cool.
As previously mentioned, the MSI GT683R-289US is a high performance gaming notebook that comes a rather hefty price tag at $1,750. However, for that price you'll find a quad-core mobile Sandy Bridge CPU. The Intel Core i7-2630QM is a great chip with a stock clock speed of 2.0GHz, TurboBoost functionality up to 2.9GHz, and 6MB L3 cache.
Since the MSI GT683R-289US is a gaming notebook, one would expect a high resolution screen. The GT683R-289US delivers with a full HD 1920x1080 screen. Pair that with the included NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M 1.5GB GDDR5 graphics card for a powerful gaming experience. The GTX 560M has an optimized GF116 core that offers higher clock speeds (about 13% faster) compared to the previous generation GTX 460M. Overall, the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M is a high performance graphics card that can run most games at the highest settings. Only really intensive PC games, such as Crysis 2, benefit from reduced settings.
The MSI GT683R-289US also has an abundance of memory with 16GB of DDR3 RAM. This provides smooth performance while running intensive programs, such as Adobe Photoshop. The laptop also has ample storage with 1TB of space. The hard drive is a 7200RPM model, which is necessary to keep the hard drive from being a bottleneck. The gaming laptop also has features that make it a good multimedia machine. With the full HD display, you'll definitely want to take advantage of the high resolution, and the included Blu-ray disc drive is a nice attribute to do just that.
Of course the system must support the latest technologies (especially for the price) and the MSI GT683R-289US offers support for USB 3.0 and HDMI 1.4. Another nice feature is the audio quality. MSI extensively markets the system with ads on the product packaging touting the system's Dynaudio speakers. It's nice to have above average sound on a laptop, especially when enabling audio in game.
In conclusion, the MSI GT683R-289US is a decent value thanks to the high performance NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M that can run the latest DirectX 11 games with ease. The GT683R-289US also has 16GB of memory and a full HD display which makes for a very pleasurable gaming experience. The quad-core Intel Core i7-2630QM also adds versatility as the MSI GT683R-289US is fast in tasks outside of gaming as well.
