Outdoor lighting can work wonders for your home's exterior, adding curb appeal, deterring unwanted visitors, and improving visibility around your property. Lighting pathways, stairs, and entrances also can help prevent accidents and ensure safe navigation at night.
To help you pick out the best outdoor light bulbs and fixtures, we tested a variety of exterior lighting products in our homes. Through our testing, we learned that the purpose of your lights will determine the right option for you.
Low-level pathway, step, or bollard lights (lights on a post) are common choices for safety-oriented outdoor lighting. Alessio Urso, studio leader at the lighting design company Light Can Help You, notes "Homeowners might opt for soft, diffused lighting sources such as string lights, lanterns, or decorative fixtures." These are great for creating ambiance and warm, relaxing gathering areas.
Brighter, motion-sensor lights are better for security purposes. For a hands-free, cordless option, pick a solar light bulb. Smart lights offer more color and time customization, so determine which factor is most important to you before shopping.
Editor's Note: This review was updated in July 2024 to include new testing insights and buying considerations for our six favorite outdoor light bulbs.
Our Top Picks
Best Solar-Powered
Lerekam Solar Landscape Spotlights
Multiple brightness settings
Auto dusk-to-dawn activation
Easy stake or wall-mount installation
Weatherproof
Color is not adjustable
Could use wider bracket angles
For hassle-free, high-value garden lighting, we love the Lerekam Solar Landscape Spotlights. We positioned four to light up trees and bushes in our front yard and two for a backyard gate. The Lerekam lights do demonstrate the convenience of solar-powered, dusk-to-dawn light bulbs. There's no need for extension cords or wiring, and no wasted energy on lighting when it's not necessary.
Each spotlight is made up of 40 LED bulbs that combine for 1,000 lumens when set to the highest of the three brightness levels. We preferred the highest setting, which we estimated could shine 20 to 25 feet away. Our tested model was fixed at a daylight, cool-white color temperature, so you'd have to purchase the separate warm-white or multicolor versions of the product if you prefer another tone of light.
The actual installation was impressively quick and easy; it took a bit longer to decide where to place them in our yard. We attached the lights to their mounting brackets and to stakes we drove in the ground (wall-mounting hardware is included). We wished the brackets could adjust to wider angles for tall trees, but we were still able to cover enough of our plants and gate.
As with all solar lights, we recommend fully charging them first for the best results. Also, on those cloudy days when the solar panels don't pull enough charge, you can power up the rechargeable battery with a USB cable.

Best Motion Sensor
Leonlite LED Motion Sensor Floodlight
Very adjustable brightness and activation settings
Straightforward, hardwired installation
Not affected by heavy rain
Smaller animals are undetected
Need to make color temperature decision at time of purchase
The versatility of the LeonLite LED Motion Sensor Security Light makes it an excellent choice for keeping many exterior areas safe and secure. Its motion detection, designed to reach roughly 70 feet, was more than enough to monitor a 10-foot garage-adjacent space we wanted to keep free from raccoons and other animals. Smaller critters went undetected, but deer triggered the lights, as did cars in the driveway and construction work on the sidewalk. Then, we were able to switch to dusk-to-dawn mode to illuminate the area all night and keep animals away.
The motion sensor captures a wide, 180-degree angle, and small knobs can fine-tune its sensitivity and how long the lights stay on when triggered. The two floodlight heads can swivel and rotate 360 degrees to point anywhere you need them to, shining up to roughly 30 feet away with solid light output in our space. Knobs adjust the brightness as well, but you will have to make your color temperature decisions at the time of purchase. You can choose from a model with warm white light (3,000K) or cool daylight (5,000K), or one that includes both plus 4,000K in between.
We found the installation process to be straightforward, taking 15 minutes with two people. It does require a hardwired electrical connection, but it's simple enough to screw into place and connect if you have existing floodlight wiring at the location. Once mounted, the motion sensor light felt sturdy and heavy rain did not affect its performance.

Best Smart
GE CYNC Smart Outdoor Flood Light Bulb
Good brightness, remotely dimmable
Multicolor with tunable white light
Easy hub-free setup
Simple to set scenes, routines, and scheduling
No Apple HomeKit compatibility
If you're looking for outdoor bulbs with more customizable features and wireless controls, the Cync smart home line from GE features these convenient PAR38-shape floodlight bulbs, UL-listed for outdoor use in wet locations.
As one of the brand's newer Direct Connect models, these lights can easily be adjusted via your WI-Fi network in addition to Bluetooth, without the need for any additional device to serve as a hub. We simply screwed them into a pair of sockets by a front door and window, and within a matter of minutes, were able to control them both with a phone app and voice commands through Amazon Alexa. (The Google Home platform is supported as well, but not Apple's HomeKit.)
The 1,300-lumen maximum brightness is quite high for a multicolor smart bulb, and you can dim them or change their colors from anywhere with an internet connection. You can also adjust the color temperature anywhere from an amber 2,000K to a bluish 7,000K, so we were able to match the fixed-temperature bulbs elsewhere in front of the house.
We easily set up custom schedules for when we wanted them to turn on and off, and they essentially ran on their own hands-free after that—aside from switching to festive colors for the holidays.

Best Floodlight
SANSI Motion Sensor Outdoor Floodlight
Extremely bright white light
Dusk-to-dawn option
Straightforward, hardwired installation
Brightness and color temperature are not adjustable
No built-in motion sensors or timers
You don't have to fiddle with many settings to get the Sansi Outdoor Integrated LED Floodlight to do its job of flooding an area with light. Set to emit a crisp 5,000K white light at a powerful 6,000 lumens, it had no problem fully illuminating the 11-x-16-foot deck and 50-x-80-foot backyard where we tested it.
The lamps shine with a wide, 320-degree beam angle, and they're situated with three lamps on each of the two arms, so you can easily adjust the lights to cover the space you want. Like most outdoor floodlights, this unit has to be wired to an existing electrical junction box, a process that took us about 25 minutes. The time included removing an older halogen floodlight that used 150 watts of energy and would get excessively hot. In contrast, the Sansi light's LEDs use just 45 watts to produce an output equivalent to 600-watt traditional bulbs.
Our fixture was connected to a light switch, which can be important if you want to be selective about when to run the light since there's no built-in motion sensor or timers. You do get a dusk-to-dawn mode, though, which ensures the light will only activate in the dark if you keep it constantly powered.

Best Strip Lights
Govee WiFi Outdoor LED Strip Lights
Colorful lights with many festive presets
Rich app-based customization and scheduling
Music sync feature
Easy hub-free setup
Color temperature not adjustable
No Apple HomeKit compatibility
Govee's outdoor strip lights, equipped with Wi-Fi connectivity, can serve as a replacement for outdoor Christmas lights with a simpler setup, more advanced controls, and year-round applications. The RGBIC technology allows for independent control of each light for fully customizable colors across the strip. (If you also want a true white light with tunable color temperature, though, look for a product labeled RGBICWW.)
Within the Govee app, you'll find expansive customization options, including over 64 colorful preset scenes ready for various holidays and occasions throughout the year. You can set schedules and routines, use Alexa and Google Assistant voice commands, integrate with compatible smart gadgets, and even sync the lights to music.
The lights come in rolls, each containing 32.8-foot-long strips, and we tested out two rolls along the front of our house. You can't cut the strips into shorter segments, but if you need more length, you can combine up to three units together in a line for just under 100 total feet.
We installed the lights using the included mounting clips and adhesive tape, which we found to be a simpler task than putting up and taking down Christmas lights every year. Thanks to the quick setup (just five minutes), we were able to spend more time exploring the seemingly endless setting options on the Govee app.
Amount: One 32.8-foot strip | Brightness: 120 lumens per meter | Wattage: 36 watts

Best for Landscape Lighting
Phillips Hue Calla Base Kit
Bright, vivid colors
Powerful app features and effects
Excellent smart compatibility and integrations
Separate hub required
Quite expensive, especially for expanded ecosystem
Philips Hue has long been the premier name in smart lighting for both indoors and out, and the brand's Calla outdoor pathway light is one of the best landscape lighting options on the market. As a cylindrical bollard-style lamp, it's ideal for shining a bit of light down onto a space for accent lighting and visibility—we positioned our test unit to cover an under-lit front yard section that included our front steps and a path.
Both the tunable-temperature white light and the rich palette of 16 million colors impressed us with their brightness and range. The white light reached 10 feet all around it, with darker blues and purples still lighting a decent 5-foot radius. The colors are also capable of more advanced animations and effects than most competitors.
The "kit" in the product's name refers to the included mounting equipment and outdoor-rated power supply, plus cabling to hook it up to an electrical source. It doesn't include the Philips Hue Bridge, which is an indoor hub that links the light to the internet and drives its advanced smart features.
Once connected, the weatherproof bollard can integrate with up to 50 Hue devices, as well as products from most leading smart home ecosystems: Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa, Google Home, Samsung SmartThings, and more. You can control it with voice assistants from those platforms and customize activation using timers, location-based geofencing triggers, and more.
The upfront costs of establishing a multi-device Hue lighting configuration can be prohibitive for many households, but the Calla is a high-quality addition if you're already using the system or willing to invest in setting one up.

Final Verdict
The best outdoor light bulbs for your home will depend on your goals and the locations you want to illuminate, but the Lerekam Solar Spotlights (our best solar-powered) are simple, effective LEDs with different brightness levels, a dusk-to-dawn function, and the ability to use daylight to keep themselves powered through the night. If you want the versatility and modern convenience of an outdoor smart bulb, the GE Cync Full Color Direct Connect Smart Outdoor Floodlights (our best smart) offer foolproof screw-in installation and Wi-Fi connectivity to provide highly personalized lighting and scheduling controls via a mobile app or voice assistants.
How We Tested the Outdoor Light Bulbs
We brought outdoor light bulbs and different types of landscape and security lighting to our homes for rigorous testing, placing them in contexts where we, as homeowners, would find the most value.
- Setup: Our testing process began with installation and setup. We documented all of the steps involved with physically mounting and powering the lights, as well as setting up any network connections, mobile apps, or smart device integration. We tracked the time needed to complete each of these steps.
- Performance: To quantify lighting performance, we activated the lights after sunset and measured how far the products were able to cast their light, noting whether the range was enough to meet our intended purposes. We also measured the motion detector range where applicable by checking the farthest distance where someone could trigger the sensor.
- Features: Other factors we noted included the brightness of the lights, their adjustability in terms of intensity and color, and the ease of operating them and modifying settings.
- Durability: Throughout our testing, we gauged durability by looking at how well the products withstood any inclement weather, from rain to wind to extreme temperatures. We watched for any damage or malfunctions over time, plus how long it took for any battery-operated (non-solar) units to reach the end of their battery life.
- Overall Value: Using our entire experience, we then determined the overall value of each product, comparing them to products like them that we've used in the past and thinking about whether we would be willing to purchase them at full price.

What to Look for in an Outdoor Light Bulb
Energy Efficiency and Sustainability
With outdoor lights typically running for extended periods every night, energy efficiency is an important consideration. Electricity consumption is measured in watts, and while incandescent, halogen, and other older types of bulbs traditionally used wattage to convey the light's brightness, today's LED lights produce equivalent output using much lower watt counts—and that's the case with all the products on this list.
"LED bulbs are highly energy-efficient and have a long lifespan, making them an excellent choice for outdoor lighting," says Urso. Additionally, solar-powered outdoor lights can be eco-friendly, as they harness renewable energy from the sun and require no wiring or electrical connections.
Our pick for the best solar-powered outdoor lights, the Lerekam Solar Spotlights, do offer extra energy savings but note that positioning the solar panels to capture enough sunlight throughout the day is part of the requirement. Without enough charge, you'll need to use the included USB cable to charge the battery.
The Brightness and Color of the Outdoor Light Bulbs
As mentioned above, with LEDs using less energy to create more light, wattage is no longer a comparable metric to compare brightness between various products. "Instead of focusing solely on wattage, it's more important to consider the lumen output, which measures the amount of visible light produced," Urso says.
Urso also brings up the unit of foot candles (fc) to give more context to brightness in terms of distance and spread. This measures how much light hits an area, which gets lower when farther from the source. "Think of lumens like the water pressure from a hose. More pressure (lumens) means more water comes out. But foot-candles are like how much water lands on your plants (the surface), depending on how far you hold the hose and how wide the spray is," Urso says.
For pathways and walkways, the recommended light level is 1 to 2 fc. For decks, patios, doorways, and security lighting, it's between 5 and 10 fc. For security purposes, light bulbs and fixtures must be capable of much brighter light, to both provide visibility and deter any unwanted visitors. Our best floodlight, for example, the Sansi Outdoor Integrated LED Flood Light, shines a whopping 6,000 lumens out across a wide area.
Another impactful aspect of any light is its color temperature, which is conveyed by its Kelvin count. A lower number in the range of 2,000K to 3,000K represents a warmer, more yellow or amber light that can create a more inviting mood. A measurement of 5,000K and up indicates cooler, bluer light, often imitating daylight for clear visibility or starkness to alarm wandering animals or people.
Placing Your Outdoor Light Bulbs
Homeowners should keep their surrounding areas in mind by selecting the appropriate types of fixtures and placing them strategically: "Light pollution can negatively impact human health, wildlife, and the environment. It's crucial to choose outdoor lights designed to direct light downward and minimize upward light spill,” says Urso.

The Bulbs' Durability—And Whether They Can Withstand Weather
Some bulbs or mounted fixtures may be intended for covered use within a porch or awning and not be fully waterproof—check the product's documentation before placing them in exposed locations.
Many outdoor lights, though, are built to operate in the middle of a yard or garden and should be weather-resistant. One spec to look for is the bulb's ingress protection (IP) rating. Commonly, as with the products on this list, you'll see IP65 weatherproofing, which means it was tested to be dust-tight and protected against water jets from different directions.
Sometimes, you'll see an outdoor product like our best strip lights, the Govee RGBIC Outdoor LED Strip Lights, where the lights themselves are weatherproof but they use a lower weather-rated power adapter (IP44 in this case). Power outlets are typically in more sheltered locations anyway, so make sure the adapter is also protected enough from the elements.
Color Options and Smart Home Connectivity
Being able to change to different colors other than white is a popular feature for outdoor lights. Just keep in mind that the colors often aren't as bright or practical as their standard white counterparts. "While not essential for all applications, multicolor LED lights can add versatility and creativity to outdoor lighting designs, allowing homeowners to change the ambiance according to their preferences or special occasions," Urso says.
Smart home connectivity is another bonus that many homeowners today find useful, minimizing the need to go outside to switch on or make adjustments to the lights. Instead, you can use an app to change the brightness and color, set custom on-off schedules or scenes, and have them work in tandem with other smart lights or accessories like motion sensors. Depending on the product's compatibility, you can control them with voice commands to a virtual assistant like Amazon's Alexa, Google Assistant, or Apple's Siri.
The GE Cync Full Color Direct Connect Smart Outdoor Floodlights rank as our best smart option since you can easily insert them into a standard light socket, connect them to your Wi-Fi, and take advantage of these high-tech functions.
