4/25/05 - With the number of companies that have dropped out of the budget desktop market, the options and differences between models has grown increasingly smaller. HP tried to differentiate itself from others by offering a wide range of preinstalled software packages with the HP Compaq Presario SR1420NX.
Powering the SR1420NX is the new Celeron D 340 processor. It should have plenty of speed for office and Internet applications, but it does lack the power for more intense task such as gaming or video editing. It comes matched with 512MB of PC2700 DDR memory that should allow it to run smoothly in most applications.
Storage is handled by an 80GB ATA hard drive. This is average for the budget segment now. It would be nice to see the system use the new SerialATA for future expansion ability. The 16x DVD+/-RW dual layer burner is a great addition and does allow those looking to get into desktop video an excellent starting platform. The 9-in-1 media card reader also allows easy access to files on flash cards from digital peripherals.
Graphics is one area that most budget systems need a lot of work and it is no different for the SR1420NX. It comes with the integrated Intel Extreme 2 graphics processor that uses 64MB of the system memory. This works fine for 2D applications but it really doesn't have the power for 3D applications. Like most budget system, it also lacks an AGP or PCI-Express slot for graphics upgrades.
