Guide Review - Compaq Presario SR1630NX

10/24/05 – AMD has made a lot of inroads into the computer market and their appearance in budget desktops such as the Compaq Presario SR1630NX huge for consumers. The Athlon 64 3500+ is a good mix of performance and future 64-bit software support that exceeds most Intel budget CPUs. The 512MB of PC3200 DDR memory is enough to let the system run most applications without too much problem.

Storage on the SR1630NX is quite good. The 200GB hard drive provides plenty of space for digital files such as music, photographs and videos. And if you need additional space, the 16x DVD+/-RW dual layer burner can let you create data, music or video DVDs and CDs. It also features Lightscribe that allows labels to be burned directly to compatible media. Rounding out the storage is a 9-in-1 card reader for use with digital peripheral flash cards.

Graphics on the SR1630NX uses the ATI Radeon Xpress 200 integrated graphics. While this does have some capability for basic 3D graphics and gaming at very low resolution, those wanting more 3D graphics performance do have the option of purchasing a separate PCI-Express graphics card and installing it in the available slot. This is a feature that has been lacking in many budget desktops for some time.

If there is one downside to the Presario SR1630NX, it is the fact that it is not a complete system. No speakers are included with the computer system nor is a monitor. Even without these, the SR1630NX is an excellent system.
