10/24/06 – Dell's Dimension E521 is very similar to the E520 model except for the use of AMD based processors. In fact, the E521 budget system comes with a very strong AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ dual core processor that provides a significant performance boost over the Intel version. Matched up with the processor is a full gigabyte of PC2-4200 DDR2 memory that lets the system run smoothly even when running multiple applications.
Storage on the Dimension E521 is identical to the E520 and on par with most budget desktops. The 160GB hard drive provides plenty of space for normal program and data storage. Those looking to use the computer for digital video might have some space constraints and should consider upgrading the hard drive. A 16x DVD+/-RW burner is included for playing or recording CDs and DVDs.
Graphics wise the Dimension E521 is a step up. Dell includes a 19” LCD monitor that provides a sizable graphical workspace for the price. In addition, Dell includes a NVIDIA GeForce 7300LE graphics card that provides improved 3D performance over integrated graphics used by most companies. While the card claims 256MB of memory, in reality it only has 128MB of memory on the card and it uses an additional 128MB of system memory to bring it up to 256MB.
The Dimension E521 isn't perfect though. The software package only includes the OS plus the MS works software and it lacks a FireWire port for those looking to hook up a digital camcorder.
