Guide Review - Gateway DX100X
10/25/05 Gateway has recently undergone a major rework of all of its computer systems in preparation for the upcoming holidays. Their latest budget desktop computer system the DX100X is based around the Intel Celeron D 336 (2.8GHz) processor. This processor is good for most day to day tasks but can get bogged down in more intensive applications such as games or video. Surprisingly, the system is matched up with 512MB of PC2-4200 DDR memory that is very fast. This should let the system run very well in memory intensive applications.
Storage on the DX100X is a bit below average. While the 80GB hard drive is about average for the budget segment, the optical storage is definitely less than desirable. The 48X CD-RW drive allows the system to playback or record date or music CDs, but it lacks the ability to even playback DVDs. Many more budget systems are also coming with DVD burners standard. An 8-in-1 media card reader lets the system read flash cards for digital peripherals.
Graphics for the DX100X uses the Intel GMA 900 integrated graphics. While this is fine for the most basic 3D graphics, it lacks any real ability to play PC games at even the most basic of detail and resolutions. Additionally, the system does not come with an AGP or PCI-Express graphics slot meaning that the graphics cannot be upgrade. On the plus side though, the system does come equipped with a 17 CRT monitor, something not included in most other budget systems.
