Guide Review - Gateway DX200S
10/26/05 Unlike the DX100, the DX200 is Gateway's second tier system that is typically more powerful. The DX200S is the value version of it that qualifies as a budget desktop computer. Rather than based upon the Celeron processor, it features a more powerful Pentium 4 516 (2.93GHz) processor. This will let it perform better in all applications. It still lacks the 64-bit extensions for future software support through. The system does come with PC2-4200 DDR2 memory that is quite fast, but the 256MB of memory will severely limit its ability to run applications smoothly.
Storage on the DX200S is well below average for a budget desktop. The 40GB of hard drive space will severely limit the amount of data that can be stored on the computer. In addition to this, the system only comes with a 48x CD-RW burner. While it does let the system read or write data or music CDs, it lacks the ability to playback or record DVDs, something found it many newer budget desktops.
Graphics for the DX200S are also quite limited. It uses the Intel GMA 900 integrated graphics. The biggest problem with this is that it uses some of the already limited system memory for the graphics. The GMA 900 has basic 3D graphics capabilities such that it is not suitable for 3D gaming at all. Since the system lacks any PCI-Express or AGP graphics slot, users will not be able to upgrade the graphics for the computer.
