4/27/05 - Since the purchase of Compaq, the HP line of computer systems has moved away from the budget categories but they still offer a low cost model with the Pavilion 1010n.
In terms of processing power, the 1010n doesn't seem much different from others. It comes standard with the Celeron D 340 processor that is fine for basic office and Internet applications. It does slow down a bit in more intensive tasks such as desktop video. The CPU is matched up with 512MB of PC2700 DDR memory allowing it to run smoothly in all but the most memory intensive tasks.
Storage is where the 1010n shines. The system comes standard with a 160GB hard drive, double the size of the standard budget desktop. This is very handy for those doing digital video or photography that requires a lot of storage space. It also comes equipped with a 16x DVD+/-RW DL burner to allow for data backups to CD or DVD. Finally, it ships with a 9-in-1 media reader for flash cards from digital peripherals.
Graphics are pretty much standard for a budget PC. It uses the Intel Extreme 2 integrated graphics that shares 64MB of system memory. This is fine for 2D applications but does not work well with 3D applications. The system does lack an AGP or PCI-Express expansion slot so that graphics cannot be upgraded.
Another area where the 1010n is strong is the software. It comes with a very diverse set of software applications that should cover pretty much every computing task that a user might need.
