5/5/08 - Polywell's Poly 6100Nx seems to have missed what the market is doing for low cost desktops. AMD is a fine maker of low cost processors that offer decent performance, but the choice of an Athlon 64 X2 4200+ leaves the system well behind other desktops in roughly the same price range. There are other AMD processors available for just a little more cost that would have made the system so much better for performance. At least they include two gigabytes of DDR2 memory to let it run smoothly with the Vista operating system.
Storage is average for the budget desktop market. The 320GB drive is certainly not spacious in the age of terabyte drives but sufficient for basic applications and data. Polywell does include a somewhat faster 20x DVD burner over the more traditional 16x models used. This doesn't generate a huge decrease in DVD burning times, but an improvement none the less. A 12-in-1 card reader allows it to interface with the most common flash media cards.
Software is going to be a big issue for many people. Rather than the full Vista Home Premium, the 6100Nx comes with the Basic version. This limits the functionality of the system, especially when it comes to the multimedia features. This is a big reason for many people to avoid the Basic version. This is also the limit of what software is provided with the system, forcing consumers to spend more money to get basic applications.
Finally, the system lacks a FireWire interface port. This is important because it is the most common type of interface for digital camcorders and makes the system difficult to use for any sort of digital video editing platform.
