10/27/06 – Polywell's Poly 485Ax-3500 gets its model designation from the AMD Athlon 64 3500+ processor used in the machine. While this is a single core processor, it still has plenty of performance to run today's applications including games without a problem. It just won't be able to switch between tasks as quickly when multitasking. It uses the newer AM2 socket design to allow it to use the 512MB of PC2-5300 DDR2 memory.
Storage wise the Poly 485Ax-3500 is below what most budget desktops provide. It only has a 80GB hard drive that limits the amount of programs and data the system can store. Thankfully it uses a very well known Seagate drive that uses a 8MB cache compared to the 2MB used in most low cost consumer systems. In addition, it uses the Sony 16x DVD+/-RW dual layer burner to allow it to record and playback CDs and DVDs.
While the Poly 485Ax-3500 has an integrated graphics processor on the motherboard, the processor actually is a dedicated Radeon X300 with its own memory rather than relying on the systems RAM. This provides it with improved 3D performance over most budget desktops but those looking for 3D gaming will want to upgrade to a better card using the PCI-Express slot. Polywell does include a 17” LCD panel with the system.
The biggest problem that most consumers will have with the Poly 485Ax-3500 is the lack of included software which will likely add to the overall cost of the system.
