Guide Review - Shuttle XPC T3100h
10/27/06 – Shuttle's XPC line of computers is well known for their small size, but the newest T3100h uses a larger more traditional tower case design. It isn't as big as a traditional desktop case but still smaller than a standard mini-tower.
Powering the XPC T3100h is the Intel Celeron D 352 budget processor. This is a very low cost processor that lacks much of the performance of newer processors found in the budget segment but it will get the job done for online and productivity purposes. It is matched up with 512MB of PC2-5300 DDR2 memory that will let it run basic programs without problems but will slow down when multiple or heavier applications are run.
Storage is probably the area where the T3100h suffers the most. The system comes standard with a 80GB hard drive that is quite small for the budget segment. Users can quickly fill this up with digital media files. Rather than a DVD burner, Shuttle includes a 52x CD-RW/DVD combo drive. This lets the system record to CD media but it can only playback DVD discs.
Graphics are very limited on the XPC T3100h. The integrated S3 Mirage graphics are below par even for an integrated graphics solution. Don't expect much at all in terms of 3D performance. The system does have a PCI-Express graphics slot for those looking to upgrade.
On the plus side, the Shuttle XPC T3100h does have a very attractive price for those looking for a basic computing platform that does have upgrade potential.
