Guide Review - eMachines T3985
4/25/05 - eMachines is synonymous with budget computing. While they ventured for a while into higher systems they returned to providing primarily budget desktop systems after the purchase by Gateway. The eMachines T3985 is their latest budget desktop system.
Powering the T3985 is the Celeron D 340 processor. This is a very common CPU in the budget desktop market. It provides a good amount of power for office and Internet applications, but it does lack some of the speed for more intense tasks such as top of the line gaming or desktop video. The processor is matched up with 512MB of PC2700 DDR to allow it to run smoothly through most applications.
Storage on the T3985 is quite good. The 80GB of hard drive space should be enough to allow users to have sufficient space for their files. The 16x DVD+/-RW dual layer DVD burning is a nice touch that lets budget users experiment with desktop video if they wish. It also comes with an 8-in-1 media reader for transferring files from digital peripherals.
Graphics are lacking as they are on most budget desktops. The graphics are driven by the Intel Extreme 2 integrated graphics that is fine for 2D but lacks the power for 3D applications. Unfortunately, the T3985 does not include an AGP or PCI-Express slot for the possibility of upgrading the graphics.
One area that the T3985 does excel is in the peripheral ports. It comes with a total of seven USB 2.0 ports that allow for a large number of peripheral devices.
