10/25/05 – After eMachines was purchased by Gateway, many of their desktop computer systems moved away from AMD to Intel processors. This has changed with the latest desktop PCs. The T6412 uses the AMD Athlon 64 3400+ processor that offers far superior performance to the Intel Celeron and low end Pentium 4 processors. It is matched up with 512MB of PC3200 DDR memory that should let it run most applications without too much difficulty.
Storage for the T6412 is quite good for a budget system. The 200GB hard drive provides plenty of storage space for digital media files including desktop video. The included 16x DVD+/-RW dual layer burner allows the system to playback or record data, music or video DVDs and CDs. A 8-in-1 media card reader is also included to allow data transfers between digital peripheral flash cards and the PC.
Graphics from the integrated ATI Radeon Xpress 200 will allow the system to do 3D graphics at lower resolutions, but it still isn't up to playing the latest PC games. Thankfully, the system comes equipped with a PCI-Express graphics card slot. This will allow the latest PC graphics cards to be installed into the system to upgrade the 3D capabilities.
Overall the eMachines T6412 is a very good budget desktop PC. It has plenty of power that should let it be functional for quite some time and it has the benefit of lots of expansion capabilities. There are some minor gripes with it such as the non-optical mouse and poor performance speakers.
