10/25/04 - Averatec is a small company that made a name for itself by selling low cost, highly portable notebook computers. Since their initial release they have expanded into additional notebook models, but they still offer a very small notebook for under $1000 with the Averatec AV3250H1.
Unlike most of the budget notebook computers that use lower cost desktop processors, the AV3250H1 uses the AMD Athlon XP-M 2200+ Mobile processor. This is very similar to the standard Athlon XP line but runs at lower voltages to help conserve battery power. This is matched up with a very sizable 512MB of PC2100 DDR memory that should be plenty to run Windows XP smoothly.
Storage space is a bit above average for a budget notebook. It comes with a larger 60GB hard drive for additional file space. Optical storage is provided by a very standard 24x CD-RW Combo drive. This allows users to burn data and music CDs or watch DVD movies on the notebook.
Graphics wise the AV3250H1 is a bit different. While it does use an integrated graphics processor like most budget notebooks, the smaller dimensions of the system restrict it to a 12.1-inch display. The graphics processor is unable to handle any real intense 3D graphics such as games.
Overall, the AV3250H1 from Averatec holds a very unique spot for a budget system. Its primary advantage is its portablity due to its small size and light weight. Those needed this would do well with this system. Those needing more power have other alternatives.
