10/17/05 – Averatec's AV3715-EH1 budget notebook could very well be classified as a low cost ultraportable notebook. The system is very small compared to what most other companies offer in a budget notebook computer. This primarily comes from the smaller 12.1” LCD screen that gives the systems its tiny dimensions.
Powering the AV3715-EH1 is the AMD Sempron 3000+ processor. This is designed for mobile applications but lacks many of the same power saving capabilities of the Pentium M processor. This gives the system a shorter battery life, but one that is still acceptable. It is matched up with 512MB of DDR memory that should let it run most applications without a problem.
Storage is extremely good for the AV3715-EH1. The system features a very large 80GB hard drive. That is double the amount of storage space found in most budget notebook computers. Averatec has also decided on including a DVD+/-RW burner to let the system create video or data DVDs as well as music or data CDs. A 4-in-1 media card reader allows it to access memory cards from digital peripherals.
There are two areas that are problematic for the AV3715-EH1. The first is the smaller screen that could put off some users. This isn't really a major problem as the smaller screen is a trade-off that one gets for the increased portability. The other is the very limited software bundle that comes with the system. This might force users for pay extra for additional applications they may require.
