Averatec 7115-EH1

About.com Rating 3

By Mark Kyrnin, About.com

The Bottom Line
Most desktop replacement notebooks tend to be focused heavily on multimedia features and the latest technology that make them quite expensive. Averatec's 7115-EH1 is one of the few desktop replacements that can be found for under US$1000, but you do have to be willing to sacrifice on performance for the large screen.

Guide Review - Averatec 7115-EH1

10/12/06 – Most people looking at the Averatec 7115-EH1 probably won't care too much about the processor or memory as they probably want it for its 17” wide screen display. This is one of the few budget notebooks that has such a large display, but there are sacrifices to the system performance in order to put the screen on such a low cost PC.

While budget notebooks are starting to get dual core processors standard, the 7115-EH1 instead uses a much older AMD Sempron 3000+ mobile processor. This severely restricts its performance compared to newer Core Duo models especially when multitasking. The system also uses older and slower PC2700 DDR2 memory rather than newer DDR2.

Storage isn't too much out of line for a budget notebook. The 80GB hard drive provides a good amount of space to store programs and digital media files. It also features a dual layer multiformat DVD burner that lets it playback or record music, movie or data CDs and DVDs.

The real attraction to the Averatec 7115-EH1 though is its 17” wide screen display. This lets the system function very well for watching DVD movies and also gives it a larger graphical workspace over most budget notebook systems. Like most budget systems, it does rely on an integrate graphics solution that will limit its 3D performance.

Of course, with such a large screen on the 7115-EH1, it is a much larger notebook system that will make it more difficult to carry around when travelling.
