10/26/04 - Gateway is undergoing a large amount of change since the purchase of eMachines. eMachines was primarily a budget PC manufacturer, but now they only offer higher end notebooks, so Gateway is left designing and selling the low cost notebooks.
Gateway's M405CS is powered by the new Intel Celeron M 320 (1.3Ghz) processor. This is identical to the popular Pentium M except it only contains half the internal cache. This gives the Celeron M the same leve of power savings but at a reduced computing power. It is matched up with 256MB of PC2100 which is enough to run Windows XP but with some slight performance drops when multitasking.
Storage is average with a 40GB hard drive and a 24x CD-RW/DVD combo optical drive. This allows the M405CS to burn data or music CDs and also play DVD movies.
Graphics are limited as they are on most budget notebook computers. It features a 14.1" LCD screen and uses the Intel Extreme 2 integrated graphics. This prevents the M405CS from performing any heavy 3D graphics applications such as games.
There is very little in terms of the M405CS that sets it apart from its competitors. While it is slightly less expensive than competing models, it also lacks some of the higher specifications such as memory. This doesn't make the M405CS a bad system, but users may be able to find better deals.
