Guide Review - Gateway NX250X
10/18/05 Gateway's NX250X has many features in it that are often found in more expensive systems but all of it found in a budget system. Powering the NX250X is the Intel Pentium M 725A (1.6GHz) processor. This gives the system excellent performance and good battery life. It is matched up with 512MB of PC2-4200 DDR2 memory to let it handle memory intensive tasks without much problem.
Storage on the NC250X is quite good. While the hard drive has an average storage space of 40GB, it spins at a faster 5400rpm giving it better performance. In addition to this, it also comes with an 8x DVD+/-RW dual layer burner. This allows the system to create music, movie or data DVDs and CDs and even use the new 8.5GB DVD media. A 6-in-1 card reader rounds out the storage capabilities.
Many notebooks are now staring to feature wide screen displays. This is now something that can be found in budget notebooks as the NX250X uses a 14 wide screen display. While the 1280x768 resolution is a bit small, it still works well for watching DVD movies on the screen. The graphics are powered by the Intel GMA 900 graphics that is standard among most notebooks now. While it is capable of 3D graphics, don't expect to play many 3D games with it.
It is hard to find much fault with the NX250X and only minor issues really come up. First, there are no multimedia specific buttons but they can still be control with function key combinations. Second, the software bundle could be somewhat improved.
