Guide Review - Gateway NX260X

10/11/06 – .Gateway's previous NX250X budget model was in need of a update and they came through with the new NX260X. It is a significant upgrade in terms of processing power as it moved from a Pentium M to the new Intel Core 2 Duo T5500 that offers better multitasking and battery life over the older Pentium M. The system comes standard with 512MB of PC2-4200 DDR2 but it is possible with some shopping to get it upgraded to 1GB.

Storage wise the NX260X is a step back from the previous model. While the hard drive space has been increased up to 80GB so it can hold more data, the system was moved back from a DVD burner standard to a CD-RW/DVD combo drive. This let's the system record music and data CDs but only playback DVD discs. Just like the memory upgrade, Gateway often offers a free upgrade to a DVD for those willing to shop around.

Graphics wise the NX260X is very similar. It uses a 14.1” wide screen LCD panel like the older NX250X that gives it a good graphical workspace without making the system too bulky. It uses the Intel GMA 950 integrated graphics that limit its 3D performance compared to a dedicated graphics core.

The NX260X did add some extra bulk over the previous model. The system is slightly wider and thicker than the older NX250X and also added a half pound in weight.
