Guide Review - Gateway NX570X Budget Notebook PC

4/9/07 – Gateway's NX570X might seem a bit confusing to consumers. The processor that comes on the base notebook configuration is a Pentium Dual-Core T2060. This naming is similar to the Core processor based on its performance designation, but it is not based on the Core design. The end result is a dual core processor that does do multitasking, but not at the same level as the Core Duo models. This helps reduce the costs of the NX570X, but it also reduces the performance.

On the bright side, Gateway has stocked the NX570X with a full gigabyte of PC2-5300 DDR2 memory. Most budget systems tend to use PC2-4200 memory to reduce costs but also tends to impact performance somewhat.

Storage is a bit disappointing for the NX570X. DVD burners are so inexpensive today that they are a common item to be found on budget desktops and notebooks. Gateway has chosen to include a 24x CD-RW/DVD combo drive instead of a DVD burner. Users can upgrade this, but it is another extra cost to the system. The 80GB hard drive is average for a budget system, but more and more companies are starting to include larger drives standard on their budget models.

All of this adds up to a fairly average budget notebook computer system with the base configuration of the NX570X. For users that are willing to put a little more money into the notebook, Gateway does offer a number of customization options that improve the processor, memory drives and even the graphics. The drawback is that it adds to the cost of the notebook.
