The Bottom Line
HP provides a surprisingly well rounded budget notebook computer with the Pavilion dv2120us. For under US$1000 the user gets a solid dual core processor, lots of memory and tons of storage space. About the only thing a user will need to worry about is all the finger prints on it from frequent use.

Guide Review - HP Pavilion dv2120us

10/11/06 – While most companies are using the Intel Core Duo processor, HP has decided to offer portable computers using the AMD Turion instead. The Pavilion dv2120us uses the Turion 64 X2 TL-52 dual core processor that lets it handle multitasking quite well. This combined with a full gigabyte of memory allows the system to run applications smoothly.

Storage is extremely strong with the Pavilion dv2120us. While most notebooks use smaller, lower cost drives, HP has decided to include a very large 120GB hard drive that provides plenty of storage space and also good performance with its 5400rpm spin rate. Users also have the ability to playback or record music, movie or data CDs and DVDs thanks to the built-in DVD burner with dual layer and LightScribe media support.

Rather than using the more popular 15.4” wide screens, the dv2120us uses the slightly smaller 14.1” wide scree panels. This still provides a good amount of graphics workspace but it also allows the system to have smaller dimensions making it easier to carry around. The display is driven by the NVIDIA GeForce 6150us integrated graphics processor that is a step up from the Intel GMA 950 but still lacks the 3D performance of a dedicated graphics core.

About the only problem with the dv2120us is the shell. The high gloss plastic is very stylish in its design but easily picks up finger prints that will make cleaning it a frequent chore.
