Guide Review - Dell Inspiron 1000

10/26/04 - Dell's Inspiron 1000 is a bit oddly named because it is the latest notebook from the company but it has a model number lower than their previous 1100 and 1150. This lower model number does not translate into a downgrade for the notebook.

Powering the Inspiron 1000 is the Intel Celeron 2.2Ghz processor. This processor is a bit slow compared to many of the other budget notebooks, but it is more than sufficient for most productivity tasks. It is matched up with 512MB of PC2100 DDR memory to allow it to run Windows XP smoothly.

Storage for the Inspiron 1000 notebook is very much average. File storage is handled by a 40GB hard drive. Optical storage is provided through a CD-RW/DVD combo drive. This allows the Inspiron 1000 to record data and music CDs and also play DVD movies.

Graphics as usual is the weak spot for budget notebooks. The Inspiron 1000 uses an SiS 650 integrated graphics processor that handles 2D graphics just fine but is very limited for 3D graphics and particularly gaming. It does come with a 15" LCD or a 14.1" LCD for those on an even tighter budget.

There are a few things to note with the Inspiron 1000 though. First, while the system does ship with wireless, it is handled through a PC Card that uses up the only Type II slot. This isn't too much of a problem for most people, but it does make the antennae external. Also, the Inspiron 1000 ships with Word Perfect 12 Office suite that includes a larger set of applications than MS Works.
