Guide Review - Toshiba Satellite M35-S163

4/15/05 - Widescreen notebooks have been growing in popularity with consumers as it provides additional viewing area that makes watching DVDs on the road more attractive. Toshiba has finally produced a budget notebook computer that integrates such a screen with the Satellite M35-S163.

Powering the Satellite M35-S163 is the Intel Celeron M 350. This processor is based on the technology from the Pentium M that allows it to provide excellent battery life compared to desktop processors previously used in budget notebooks. This is matched up with 512MB of PC2700 DDR memory that should allow it to smoothly run all but the most intensive of computing tasks.

Storage is also quite strong for the M35-S163. Toshiba has included a 60GB hard drive that is 50% larger than the average budget notebook. It also features a CD-RW/Combo drive that allows users to watch DVD movies or burn data and music CDs. Finally they include a 5-in-1 media reader for digital peripheral memory cards.

The stand out feature for the Satellite M35-S163 is the 15.4" widescreen display. This allows movies to be watched in better detail as well as allowing more graphical desk space. It uses the integrated Intel Extreme 2 graphics that is common for most notebooks, but it does lack 3D performance.

Overall, the Toshiba Satellite M35-S163 is tough to beat when it comes to budget notebooks. It does barely fall below the threshold for being considered a budget system, but it certain packs the features.
