10/29/04 - Toshiba is one of many PC manufacturer's that is having to deal with the increasing costs of components. These strains have made it difficult for them to provide notebook computers for that magical price of under $1000. The Satellite A60-S1591ST does manage to achieve the sub-$1000 price though.
Powering the A60-S1591ST is the Celeron D (2.6GHz) processor. This is a new version of the Celeron with a higher speed bus that gives increased performance over earlier Celerons. It is matched up to 256MB of PC2700 DDR memory that better matches the speed of the processor and allows it to run Windows XP fairly smooth.
Storage is about average for a budget system. It comes standard with a 30GB hard drive that is slightly lower than average. It also features a 24x CD-RW/DVD combo drive so it can record CDs or play DVDs.
Graphics are typical of a budget oriented notebook. It has a 15" LCD display and integrated ATI Mobility 7000 graphics. This is perfectly acceptable for 2D graphics, but it lacks the power for any current 3D applications such as games.
The biggest drawback to the Satellite A60-S1591ST is the lack of productivity software. This was done to help reduce the cost of the machine to under $1000. Those who want to get a more complete software package can buy the A60-S1591 that includes MS Works, a faster CPU and larger hard drive.
