Guide Review - WinBook V415

4/20/06 – WinBook's V415 is a step up from their previous budget notebooks. The main area of improvement is the size and weight. The system now weighs only 6.3 lbs. and is more in line with other budget systems.

Powering the WinBook V415 is the Intel Celeron M 370 (1.5GHz) processor. While this isn't as fast as other processors found in the budget segment, it is more than sufficient for the average users applications. The surprising thing is the inclusion of a full gigabyte of memory that will help prevent slowdowns due to memory intensive programs. It would be nice to see WinBook use some faster memory than the PC2700 DDR included with the notebook.

Storage is one area that the WinBook V415 does very well. The system comes with a very large 100GB hard drive. This allows users to store a large amount of programs and data on the system. The drive does spin at the slower 4200rpm rate which slightly reduces performance. If space does become an issue, the V415 also comes with a 8x DVD+/-RW dual layer burner. This lets users read or create music, movie or data CDs and DVDs.

The WinBook V415 features a 15.4” wide screen LCD display that is good for watching movies on. Of course, this may not be the best way to use the notebook as it has a very limited battery life that restricts the length it can be used away from a power socket. The SiSReal256E graphics are also quite insufficient for any 3D applications limiting the system to productivity and internet tasks.
