10/9/06 – While most budget notebooks are starting to actually use some of the latest processors, WinBook has decided to continue to use the older Pentium M to power its W245 budget model. This processor does have low power usage for a portable, but it just doesn't have to same computing power as the newer Core processors. Thankfully WinBook has decided to ship it with a full gigabyte of memory that allows it to run more applications with fewer slow downs.
Storage has traditionally been one of the problem areas for budget notebooks. The cost for the larger hard drives and DVD burners meant that they lacked the features. With decreasing costs and increasing technology, WinBook now offers a fairly sizable 100GB hard drive and a full dual layer DVD burner in the W245. This gives the system a slight edge in terms of the storage over the average budget notebook.
With the increase in wide screen displays on notebooks, it was only a matter of time before the larger screens started to come standard for low cost systems. WinBook uses the 14” wide screen LCD rather than the 15.4” by most companies. This gives it a good viewing area but allows the system to be more compact and portable.
Software is mixed for the W245. While the system does come with the Windows XP Professional operating system, it lacks any productivity software. This can mean an extra expensive for those requiring the programs.
