Apr 24 2009 - The eMachines EL1210-11 is a small form factor budget system that is based around the redesigned AMD Athlon X2 series processors. This fairly old processor is being given a new life as a low cost, energy efficient processor. In terms of modern budget processors, its performance is quite a bit lower but it is far and away better than the Atom processors found in nettop systems. This give the EL1210-11 an odd position in the low cost desktop world. It certainly is a good system for those looking at basic computing such as Internet, productivity and basic multimedia use. Anything like desktop video or gaming is pretty much out of the question.
Probably the oddest choice for the EL1210-11 is the hard drive. The 160GB hard drive is extremely small in terms of storage and something that is more common in low cost nettop systems. This will provide very limit space for applications and data. At least the system comes with a dual layer DVD burner and multi-card reader for flash memory cards. A surprising feature though is the inclusion of an eSATA port on the back for use with high speed external storage that actually makes up somewhat for the very small hard drive.
The graphics are kind of a mixed bag on the EL1210-11. It uses a newer GeForce 8200 integrated graphics solution that does offer it a bit higher 3D performance, but it still lacks much for any real 3D gaming usage. There is a PCI-Express c16 graphics card slot inside of the machine, but the limited space inside the small case and low wattage power supply severely limit the ability to put such a card inside.
The net result of the EL1210-11 is a system that is out of place. It certainly is good as a decent low cost basic desktop PC. Buyer's just need to be aware of the limitations compared to more expensive desktops.
