05/15/06 - Asus is best known as a motherboard manufacturer, but they also produce a wide range of computer peripherals and even notebook systems. The DRW-1608P2 is their latest high speed DVD burner. It supports both the +R and -R formats. Dual layer media is supported at the 8x speed, the fastest currently available.
In testing, the Asus DRW-1608P2 performed extremely well with the dual layer media. Individuals looking for 8.5GB or extra long video storage would be well served by the drive. In most of the other DVD media types, the drive was more average paced in terms of writing times. CD-R media was much slower than average, making the drive less suitable for those that use their computers for small storage or creating CD audio discs.
One of the other notable features of the drive during testing was the noise levels. The drive produced very little noise compared to other similar specification drives when writing or reading to materials. This can also make the ASUS DRW-1608P2 a good choice for those looking to use the drive in a low noise system.
In addition to the drive, Asus also supplies the Nero Burning software suite for CD and DVD burning purposes.
