05/16/06 – DVD-RAM was not a very popular video recording format in the US, but it was very strong in Asia. Recently, a number of DVD burners have been adding support for this relatively unknown format for super compatible drives. LG Electronics is one of those companies adding support for this format with its GSA-4167B.
In addition to the DVD-RAM support, the GSA-4167B also supports the DVD+R and DVD-R formats. While the DVD+R format is supported with fast recording speeds of 16x for recordable and 8x for dual layer and rewritable, the DVD-R support is a bit more lacking with 16x for recordable, 4x for dual layer and 6x for rewritable. CD-R speeds are 48x for the recordable format and 32x for rewritable.
During testing, the LG Electronics GSA-4167B showed some of the best write times for the various DVD+R formats. Speeds for the DVD-R formats weren't as fast as the 8x rated DVD burners, but they were very strong for its rated speeds. CD-R speeds were about average compared to other DVD burners.
Overall, the LG Electronics GSA-4167B was quite a surprise. For such a low cost DVD burner, the performance overall was quite good that make it a good choice for those looking for a DVD burner on a budget.
