The Bottom Line

Guide Review - NEC ND-4570A 16x DVD DL Burner

05/17/06 – NEC was one of the first companies to produce a DVD burner available that did not use lead in its construction. The ND-3550A was not only a very environmental drive, but it also had very respectible performance. The new ND-4570A is their latest burner that adds DVD-RAM support.

In terms of performance, the ND-4570A offers some of the highest numbers on paper. It supports all of the high speed DVD+R formats including 16x recordable and 8x dual layer and rewritable formats. DVD-R is very similar with 16x for recordable and 8x for rewritable but only 6x for dual layer media. CD-R performance is also quite strong with 48x recordable and 32x rewritable support.

In terms of real world performance, the NEC falls into the middle of the pack in overall write times. It doesn't excel at any particular format, but it doesn't seem to languish either. The only area where it had problems was attempting to record a DVD+R dual layer disc. The program consistently crashed out around 80 percent through the writing of the disc with no way to recover. This could have been a problem with the media itself or with the program. In either case, it should be something that buyers are aware of. CD performance was similarly middle of the road.
