Guide Review - Samsung SH-S183L 18x DVD+/-RW Dual Layer Burner
3/6/07 – Like many of the drive manufacturers, Samsung claims their SH-S183L drive to record to DVD+R and DVD-R media up to speeds of 18x. This is true of the drive as long as the discs used during the burning process are ones that have been certified for this speed by Samsung. Media that is not certified may record at 18x speeds, but is more likely to fall back to the standard 16x recording.
The SH-S183L drive is pack with all sorts of features and compatible media types. In addition to supporting the CD and DVD standards, the drive is also compatible with the very uncommon DVD-RAM media type and can also be used to burn labels directly to LightScribe compatible media. Recording speeds are all listed as being quite fast but the CD recording speeds are only listed at 40x, less than many other DVD burners.
During testing of the Samsung SH-S183L drive, recording speeds were consistently above average for the DVD media types, but it fell short of getting the fastest speeds for any particular media type. With 16x standard media it did strongly enough that it is a solid performer regardless if 18x compatible media is used or not. The big surprise came from the CD recording tests. Even though it is rated at 40x speeds, the recording times were generally faster than many 48x rated drives. This makes it a solid choice for those looking to record to CD media often.
On the downside, access times both for the various DVD and CD media types were below average. This means that it takes a bit longer for the data tracks to be found with the Samsung SH-S183L drive, but once it locates them, it does perform well. Read/Leave Comments
