DVD Burners Tested and Media

All of the drives used in this comparison are listed as being at least 16x for both DVD+R and DVD-R media types. Speeds for the RW and dual-layer media vary between the different models. In addition to this, some models support the DVD-RAM format that I did not test due to lack of compatible media. A couple models also support Lightscribe media for burning labels directly to the discs. Each drive was purchased via retail channels.

Below are a list of the drives used in the tests. Each model number links to my individual review comments for the drive along with the specifications for the drive.

Media Used

The brand and type of media can play a significant role in how well a drive is able to perform or even work. I tried to use highly reliable brands of media that I could obtain. For the various tests, the following media was used:

  • CD-R – TDK 52x 80-min
  • DVD-R – Verbatim 16x
  • DVD-R DL – Verbatim 8x
  • DVD-RW – TDK 4x
  • DVD+R – Verbatim 16x
  • DVD+R DL – Verbatim 8x
  • DVD+RW – RiData 8x
