Unlike DVD-R dual layer media, DVD+R dual layer media is more prevalent at the 8x speeds, but the media still plays an important role in how the drives perform. Plextor's PX-760A claims to be able to write at 10x speeds on 8x media, but in the tests it only ran at a 6x speed. Similarly, the HP dvd740i and Samsung SH-S162L only ran at 2.4x speeds with the Verbatim 8x media.
The LGE GSA-4167B had the fastest writing times for the DVD+R DL media even though it recorded at a 6x speed with the media. Similarly, the Plextor PX-760A also scored very closely writing at a 6x speed. Only the ASUS DRW-1608P2 and Pioneer DVR-110 were able to achieve 8x speeds with the media but were slightly slower than the first two. Both the BenQ DW1655 and NEC ND-4570A failed to properly write the media and were unable to complete the recording test.
Even though the BenQ drive was unable to complete writing a DVD+R DL disc, it was able to read the disc at a much faster speed than the other drives. Still, most people are buying burners for creating the discs, not reading them. Access times were pretty much inline with specifications with only the PX-760A getting near the 100ms mark. CPU usage was very close across the board.
