Guide Review - ABS Mayhem Z5

1/8/07 – The driving force behind the design of the ABS Mayhem Z5 is PC gaming. With its high-resolution wide screen 17-inch display, the GeForce 7950 GTX graphics, high-end Intel Core 2 Duo T7200 mobile processor and fast 100GB 7,200rpm Hitachi hard drive, the system really does excel at mobile gaming. Add to this a price that is less than some other high-end gaming desktop replacements and the Mayhem Z5 becomes even more attractive, but it does has some faults.

In addition to most of the features one would find in a notebook system, ABS has also included a number of multimedia features. Most notable is the inclusion of a TV tuner that is capable of receiving standard analog TV as well as DVB-T signals for HDTV support. There are some drawbacks to this those. First off is that DVB-T signals are a bit more difficult to receive so unless you are in a good range of a HDTV broadcast tower don't expect to use it much. The more glaring error is the lack of options for the Windows XP Media Center Edition operating system to really integrate these media features into the OS. It does come with software to do all the standard multimedia features but they aren't as nicely integrated and accessible.

While the price is very competitive for its features, the system is still quite expensive compared to most desktop replacements and that will impact those looking at it. The system is also heavier than the average desktop replacement making it a bit less portable over long distances if you have to carry it in a bag. Still, those looking for a high performance notebook with powerful desktop equivalent graphics, the ABS Mayhem Z5 does have a lot to offer.
