Guide Review - Compaq Presario R3340US
1/17/05 - Most companies that offer desktop replacement notebooks tend to pack together a large amount of desktop components to use inside of them. Compaq took a slightly different approach with the Presario R3340US. Rather than using an Intel processor, they have based their latest desktop replacement on the AMD processor line.
Powering the Presario R3340US is the mobile version of the AMD Athlon 64 3200+ processor. This is a very strong processor that has future support for 64-bit operating system. It is matched up with 512MB of PC2700 DDR memory. One drawback though is that the system is limited to 1280MB of RAM compared to 2GB for most system.
Storage is quite good for the R3340US considering its price. It has a fairly large capacity, 80GB, hard drive and even features a DVD burner. This is a nice feature even if it is not one of the new high speed burners. Also included is a 5-in-1 media card reader.
While most desktop replacements are migrating towards a 17" display, the R3340US uses the smaller 15.4" wide screen display. The graphics are powered by the dated GeForce4 440 graphics processor. While better than most integrated solution, it still lacks power for many of today's 3D gaming applications.
Overall, the Presario 3440US is a very strong system for its price. It is a good alternative to many larger more expensive desktop replacements for those who don't need performance 3D graphics but want a good all around system.
