(7/25/05) – In order to reduce the overall cost of the Presario R4125US, Compaq has opted to use the AMD Athlon 64 Mobile 3500+ over the more popular Intel Pentium M. This processor provides a lot of power, but it doesn't have as many of the power savings of the Intel. It would be nice to see Compaq include PC3200 memory instead of the 512MB of PC2700 DDR memory.
Storage is surprisingly good for a low cost desktop replacement. The 100GB hard drive provides plenty of storage space even for digital videos that take up a lot of space. It does sacrifice some speed by using a slower 4200rpm drive. A DVD+/-RW burner with dual layer support is also included for compatibility with all the major types of optical media in use.
Multimedia is where the Presario R4125US has the most features that are reduced for costs. Most desktop replacements now feature 17” wide screen LCDs, instead the R4125US uses a 15.4” wide LCD more commonly found in the thin and light segment. This does make the system a bit more portable however. The graphics also use an integrated Radeon Xpress 200 graphics core. This does perform better than most as it comes with 128MB of dedicated memory, but it still lacks the 3D performance of many desktop replacements.
Overall, the Compaq Presario R4125US isn't a bad machine, it just has a significant number of trade offs that make it less than most desktop replacement system, but it is good for those on a tight budget.
